The entire month of June is dedicated to the gay, lesbian, transgender and all other queer people. Pride month is celebrated to honor the Stonewall riots of 1969, which took place in New York City. Celebrations take place in the form of protests, events and parades. It’s partly political activism and partly celebration.

If you’re a part of the LGBTQIA+ community or a straight ally and wondering how to celebrate pride month, we got you!

  • Attend Pride Parades: Pride parades are a wonderful experience for learning about the LGBTQ+ community as well as making friends. They are held in various cities, all you need to do is search upcoming parades near you. Cannot attend one outside? No problem! Attend a virtual one. There are numerous pride parade events which are completely remote.

  • Learn more about LGBT history: Why not take this time to learn more about the historical figures of LGBT? With advanced technology, a simple google search can feed us fascinating facts and information.

  • Donate to LGBTQ+ Organizations: If possible, donate to the organizations and nonprofits based on LGBTQ. Support local LGBT businesses!

  • Make rainbow related items: It isn’t unknown that the rainbow flag is a symbol for the queer community. Bake rainbow cakes, make rainbow masks, clothes, paintings and so on.

  • Consume LGBTQ media: Read books by queer authors or those which are centered on this topic. Here are some recommendations:

→ Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

→ Cemetery Boys by Aidan Thomas

→ The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

→ If I was Your Girl by Meredith Russo

→ Call me by Your Name by André Aciman

Don’t like reading? There are various movies and TV shows as well. Some of the popular ones include Heartstopper, The Way He Looks, The Danish Girl.

It doesn’t matter if you’re closeted or have came out, you’re all valid. Happy Pride!
